About the ETUQ

Everyday Technology Use Questionnaire (ETUQ) is an OT tool, developed by Louise Nygård, Lena Rosenberg and Anders Kottorp. The same research group also has developed another instrument, Management of Everyday Technology Assessment (META).

The ETUQ has Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) as theorethical basis. The ETUQ captures what everyday technologies that is relevant for the person, which everyday technology the person uses or does not use and if there are difficulties in using the technology.

An online course is included (access with password from the purchased e-manual).

Use

The ETUQ was initially developed to target older adults, but experience from using it in research and clinical practice shows it can be used with adults in general, with or without different kinds of disabilities.

The ETUQ has been used in research into older adults with or without mild cognitive impairment or early-stage dementia, and in research into adults with mental retardation, adults with an acquired brain injury and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In recent years, ETUQ has been used in various areas of practice in occupational therapy.

Content and structure

The ETUQ questionnaire contains questions on more than 100 everyday technologies (items) that most people encounter in their daily lives. The products and functions are divided into seven topic areas as follows:

  1. Home maintenance (coffee maker, washing machine etc.)
  2. Information and communication (computer, smartphone etc.)
  3. Self-care (hearing aid, electronic medication dispenser etc.)
  4. Maintenance and repair (heat pump, power drill etc.)
  5. Accessibility (entry phone, elevator etc.)
  6. Finances and purchasing (cash machine, self-scanning etc.)
  7. Travel (ticket vending machine, gas pump etc.)

The ETUQ questionnaire used in structured interviews. An interview conducted by an occupational therapist takes about 40–60 minutes. A fillable PDF file of the form is available with the password in the manual.
